Selection of Bills Committee

Report No. 5 of 2023

The Senate debated the adoption of the report. The recommendations of the report were agreed to , with amendments, on Thursday, 11 May 2023.

  1. The committee met in private session on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 at 7.13 pm.
  2. The committee recommends that—
    1. the Customs Legislation Amendment (Commercial Greyhound Export and Import Prohibition) Bill 2021 be referred immediately to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 1 September 2023 (see appendix 1 for a statement of reasons for referral);
    2. the Defence Capability Assurance and Oversight Bill 2023 be referred immediately to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 7 September 2023 (see appendix 2 for a statement of reasons for referral);
    3. the provisions of the Defence Legislation Amendment (Naval Nuclear Propulsion) Bill 2023 be referred immediately to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee but was unable to reach agreement on a reporting date (see appendix 3 for a statement of reasons for referral);
    4. the provisions of the Family Law Amendment Bill 2023 be referred immediately to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee but was unable to reach agreement on a reporting date (see appendix 4 for a statement of reasons for referral);
    5. the provisions of the Family Law Amendment (Information Sharing) Bill 2023 be referred immediately to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 14 June 2023 (see appendix 4 for a statement of reasons for referral); and
    6. contingent upon introduction in the Senate, the Murdoch Media Inquiry Bill 2023 be referred immediately to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 16 October 2023 (see appendix 5 for a statement of reasons for referral).
  3. The committee recommends that the following bills not be referred to committees:
    • Constitution Alteration (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice) 2023
    • Snowy Hydro Corporatisation Amendment (No New Fossil Fuels) Bill 2021 [No. 2]
    • Social Services Legislation Amendment (Child Support Measures) Bill 2023.
  4. The committee deferred consideration of the following bills to its next meeting:
    • Criminal Code Amendment (Inciting Illegal Disruptive Activities) Bill 2023
    • Ending Native Forest Logging Bill 2023
    • Electoral Legislation Amendment (Lowering the Voting Age) Bill 2023
    • Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Regional Forest Agreements) Bill 2020
    • Fair Work Amendment (Right to Disconnect) Bill 2023 [No. 2]
    • Productivity Commission Amendment (Electricity Reporting) Bill 2023
    • Treasury Laws Amendment (2023 Measures No. 2) Bill 2023
    • United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Bill 2022.
