Science Underpinning the Inability to Eradicate the Asian Honeybee
Information about the Inquiry
On 22 March 2011 the Senate referred the following matter to the Senate Standing Committees on Rural Affairs and Transport for inquiry and report.
(a) the science underpinning the technical assumption that Apis cerana , the Asian honey bee, cannot be eradicated in Australia;
(b) the science underpinning the assumption that the Asian honey bee will not spread throughout Australia;
(c) the science relating to the impacts of the spread of the Asian honey bee on biodiversity, pollination and the European honey bee; and
(d) the cost benefit of eradication of the Asian honey bee.
On 7 April 2011, the committee presented an interim report in which it indicated that additional time is required to consider the evidence presented during the course of the inquiry, and that the committee intends to present its final report by 30 June 2011.
Submissions should be received by 31 March 2011. The reporting date is 08 April 2011. The Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 30 June 2011.
The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to rat.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.
