Information about the Inquiry

Telecommunications Interception and Intelligence Services Legislation Amendment Bill 2010

Information about the Inquiry

On 24 June 2010 the Senate referred the following matter to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for inquiry and report.

Due to the prorogation of the 42nd Parliament and the dissolution of the House of Representatives on 19 July 2010, the Committee has determined not to continue this inquiry. If the Bill is reintroduced in the new parliament, the Senate can again refer it to the Committee for inquiry and report.

The Bill seeks to amend the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979 and the Intelligence Services Act 2001 to enable greater cooperation, assistance and information sharing within Australia's law enforcement and national security communities. In particular, the Bill will enable the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, the Defence Signals Directorate and the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation to more closely cooperate in the performance of their respective functions.

Submissions should be received by 10 August 2010.

The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to legcon.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.

Alternatively, written submissions may be sent to:
