Information about the inquiry
On 30 November 2005, the Senate
referred the above Bills to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation
Committee for inquiry and report by
27 February 2006.
These Bills
will replace the Australian Citizenship Act 1948 (Cth), which governs
the acquisition, revocation and resumption of Australian citizenship.
The Bills
seek to, among other things:

reorganise existing provisions to ensure consistency;
- amend
certain citizenship application, residence, approval and Ministerial
discretion provisions;
- change
provisions relating to resumption of renounced citizenship, citizenship by
descent and revocation of citizenship;
- and
implement a legislative framework for the collection, use and storage of
personal identifiers.
Lodging Submissions
Submissions are called for by 16 January 2006. Submissions become Committee documents and are only made
public after a decision by the Committee. Unauthorised release of
submissions is not covered by parliamentary privilege. Further assistance
