Senate Select Committee on Superannuation and Financial Services

Media Release

TAXATION LAWS AMENDMENT (SUPERANNUATION CONTRIBUTIONS) BILL 2000

Public Hearing
Monday 27 November 2000

On Monday 27 November, in Canberra, the Senate Select Committee on Superannuation and Financial Services will be holding a public hearing into the provisions of the Taxation Laws Amendment (Superannuation Contributions) Bill 2000.

The Bill will amend the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936, the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and the Fringe Benefits Tax Assessment Act 1986, in order to clarify the definition of ‘eligible employee’, to deny deductions for employer superannuation contributions knowingly made to non-complying superannuation funds, and to ensure that only contributions made on behalf of an employee are excluded from fringe benefits tax.

In referring the Bill to the Committee for inquiry and report, the Selection of Bills Committee determined that the principal issue for consideration is the use of offshore superannuation schemes for tax evasion.

The Committee will be taking evidence from some groups and individuals involved in the superannuation industry and taxation planners, as well as officials from the Australian Taxation Office.

The draft program for the hearing is attached.
