Terms of reference
On 25 June 2008, the Senate referred the following matter to the
Select Committee on Agricultural and Related Industries:
Food production in Australia and the question of how to produce food that
is:
- affordable to consumers;
- viable for production by farmers; and
- of sustainable impact on the environment.
The committee invites you to
make a submission addressing all or some of these issues. Submissions will
be received up until November 2009. While it would assist the
committee to receive submissions by this date, the committee will continue
to accept submissions throughout the course of the inquiry. The reporting
date for the inquiry is 27 November 2009. On 24
June 2010 the Senate granted the Committee and extension of time to
report until 23 August 2010.
The committee has resolved to consider the impact of
managed investment schemes (MIS) within its current inquiry into food
production. The committee proposes to examine the impact of MIS, and the
recent collapse of some MIS companies, on:
- land and land prices;
- water resources and water prices;
- the efficient production of food, including the impact of
MIS on supply and demand and on the availability and efficient use of
capital;
- the social fabric of rural and regional communities,
particularly the availability of employment and capacity building
opportunities within these communities;
- returns to farmers; and
- opportunities for new and emerging agricultural products.
The closing date for MIS submissions is 23 July 2009. Late
submissions will be accepted.
Electronic submissions can be
lodged at agriculture.sen@aph.gov.au
or sent by mail to:
