Report

Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Bill 2012 and related bills [Provisions]

1.1    On 22 March 2012 the Senate jointly referred the provisions of the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Bill 2012; the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) (Consequential Amendments and Transitional Provisions) Bill 2012; the Shipping Reform (Tax Incentives) Bill 2012; the Shipping Registration Amendment (Australian International Shipping Register) Bill 2012; and the Tax Laws Amendment (Shipping Reform) Bill 2012 to the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 19 June 2012.

1.2    The Senate also referred these bills to the Economics Legislation Committee, which is intending to undertake a comprehensive inquiry.

1.3    The Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Legislation Committee has agreed that, because it is open to any member wishing to participate in a substantive examination of the bills to participate in the Economic Committee inquiry process, in the interests of efficiency only this brief report would be presented to the Senate.

1.4    Accordingly, this Committee recommends that the Senate rely on the report of the Economics Committee in informing itself of the content and likely effect of the bills, and in considering whether they should be passed.

Senator Gavin Marshall
