Inquiry into the Provision of Childcare

Information about the Inquiry

On 25 November 2008 the Senate referred the following matters to the Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee for inquiry and report.

  1. the financial, social and industry impact of the ABC Learning collapse on the provision of child care in Australia;

  2. alternative options and models for the provision of child care;

  3. the role of governments at all levels in:
    1. funding for community, not-for-profit and independent service providers,

    2. consistent regulatory frameworks for child care across the country,

    3. licensing requirements to operate child care centres,

    4. nationally-consistent training and qualification requirements for child care workers, and

    5. the collection, evaluation and publishing of reliable, up-to-date data on casual and permanent child care vacancies;

  4. the feasibility for establishing a national authority to oversee the child care industry in Australia; and

  5. other related matters.

Submissions should be received by 30 January 2009. The reporting date is 17 September 2009. On 29 October 2009,the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 23 November 2009.

The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to eewr.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.
