On 18 June 2009, the Senate referred the provisions of the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill 2009 and the Renewable Energy (Electricity) (Charge) Amendment Bill 2009 to the Economics Legislation Committee.
The bill seeks to implement the Government's objective of increasing the renewable energy target from 9,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2010 to 45,000 GWh in 2020. This would imply that at least 20 per cent of Australia's electricity comes from renewable sources by 2020.
The Committee is inviting submissions to this inquiry by 5pm, Friday 24 July 2009. It is due to report to the Senate by 12 August 2009.
