Review of Australia's relations with the United Nations

All Committees in the House of Representatives and joint committees of the Senate and House of Representatives for the 40th Parliament ceased to exist upon dissolution of the House of Representatives at 4:59pm, Tuesday 31 August 2004. Therefore, this inquiry has now lapsed.

On 2 July 2002, the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade conducted its first annual review of Australia's activities at the United Nations.

This decision had its origins in a report presented to the Committee in June 2001 on Australia's Role in United Nations Reform.

In that report, the Committee concluded that while the ideals of the United Nations are as important today as when they were first written, the organisation itself was in dire need of reform.

One of the recommendations in the report was that, to encourage greater community awareness and understanding of the United Nations, the Committee should conduct public hearings each year on Australia's activities at the United Nations.
