Summary

Following government endorsement of the recommendations of the Review of the Corporate Governance of Statutory Authorities and Office Holders (the Uhrig Review), the bill amends the: Fisheries Administration Act 1991, Fisheries Management Act 1991 and Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984 to implement changes to the governance arrangements of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority; Fisheries Management Act 1991 and Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984 to require foreign fishing vessels to stow fishing equipment whilst transiting through the Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ); and Fisheries Management Act 1991 and Migration Act 1958 to enable enforcement action to be taken against foreign vessels breaching international fishery management measures and boats supporting illegal fishing in the AFZ.
