- Total online retail sales were $4,196.2 million in August 2021, in seasonally adjusted terms. This was the highest level for monthly online retail sales in the history of this series. In seasonally adjusted terms, the $549 million (15.1%) rise was the second largest dollar term rise, following April 2020.

- There were 150,880 visitor arrivals in 2020–21. This was down 97.8% on the previous year with 6.6 million fewer arrivals. New Zealand was the largest source country in 2020–21, accounting for 83,710 visitors nationally. The main reason for travel was ‘Visiting friends/relatives’ (54.1%). A year ago, the main reason was ‘Holiday’ (46.3%).
Statistics of the month
There were 161,300 deaths registered in Australia in 2020 compared to 169,301 in 2019. The median age at death was 81.7 years (78.9 for males, 84.6 for females). In 2020, the top five leading causes of death remained the same as in 2019 (Ischaemic heart disease, Dementia including Alzheimer's disease, Cerebrovascular diseases, Lung cancer and Chronic lower respiratory diseases).
COVID-19 was the 38th ranked cause of death in 2020 with 898 deaths recorded through the civil registration system. Among those people, the most commonly reported co-morbidity was dementia, followed by chronic heart conditions, hypertension and diabetes.
There was a decrease in 2020 in deaths from preventable causes such as suicide, drug overdoses and motor vehicle accidents.
- There were 3,139 deaths due to suicide (2,384 males and 755 females). This compares to 3,318 suicides in 2019 (2,502 males and 816 females). The age-standardised suicide rate was 12.1 deaths per 100,000 people, down from 12.9 in 2019.
- There were 1,163 people who died from a motor vehicle accident in 2020 compared to 1,282 in 2019. This represents a 10% decrease.
- There were 1,842 drug-induced deaths in 2020 compared to 1,874 in 2019. This represents a 4% decrease in the age-standardised rate of drug-induced deaths from 2019. Opioids were the most common drug class identified in toxicology for drug-induced deaths.
However, alcohol-induced deaths increased in 2020 with 108 additional deaths compared to 2019. There were 1,452 (1,056 males and 396 females) alcohol-induced deaths, an 8.3% increase in the age-standardised rate from 2019.
