On 7 September 2015, the Senate referred an inquiry into the environmental, social and economic impacts of large-capacity fishing vessels commonly known as 'Supertrawlers' operating in Australia's marine jurisdiction to the Environment and Communications References Committee. The committee is to report by 30 April 2016.

The committee requests an extension of time to report until 24 August 2016 to allow it to conduct public hearings, consider the evidence received and to conclude its deliberations.
