On 23 June 2021, the Senate agreed to a second reading amendment which referred the Water Legislation Amendment (Inspector-General of Water Compliance and Other Measures) Act 2021 (the Act) to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee (the Committee) for inquiry upon Royal Assent to examine any potential further amendments to improve the operation of the Act and any related matters. The Committee is due to present an interim report three months after the date of Royal Assent and report six months after the date of Royal Assent. Royal Assent was given on 30 June 2021. The Committee has therefore committed to provide an interim report by 30 September 2021 and a final report by 30 December 2021.
The Committee tables this interim report pursuant to the second reading amendment. The Committee sought submissions by 3 August 2021 and has received 12 submissions. The Committee is continuing to gather evidence to inform its deliberations and has agreed that a substantive final report will be tabled by 30 December 2021.
