Additional Comments by Senator Stirling Griff

1.1        Red tape is a significant burden across the business sector and on small businesses in particular. As such, it should be reduced as far as possible. 

1.2        It is recognised that there are inconsistencies in compliance requirements applicable to the display and sale of tobacco products between jurisdictions. Any changes to these regulatory measures need to be made in such a way so as not to compromise public health outcomes.  

1.3        Appropriate tobacco control measures, including advertising restrictions and plain packaging and labelling, have been key contributors to positive public health outcomes.

1.4        While inconsistencies may exist in terms of how tobacco products are treated and regulated across jurisdictions, this is an issue that warrants a separate and more thorough investigation taking into account related health, social and economic considerations.
