On 25 June 2014 the Senate referred an inquiry into the structure and development of forestry managed investment schemes to the Senate Economics References Committee for inquiry and report by 27 October 2014.

On 2 September 2014, the committee was granted an extension to report by 31 March 2015. On 2 December 2014, the committee received a further extension to report by 25 June 2015. The committee was granted a further extension on 24 June 2015 to report by 17 September 2015. On 20 August 2015, the committee was granted an extension to report by 12 November 2015. Following a further extension granted on 9 November 2015, the committee is now due to report by 26 November 2015. The committee was granted a further extension on 25 November 2015 to report by 16 December 2015. On 16 December 2015 the committee was granted a further extension to report by 4 February 2016. On 3 February 2016, the Senate granted an extension to report by 7 March 2016.

The committee was granted a further extension on 3 March 2016 to report by 14 March 2016.

Initial closing date for submissions was 4 September 2014. Following the extension of the reporting date, the committee was accepting submissions until 15 December 2014.
