[5]        The Document Verification Service (DVS), managed by the Attorney-General's Department, is an online system that allows organisations, including businesses with a reasonable need to use a government identifier, to take information from a person's identity document with the person's consent, and compare that record against the corresponding record of the document's issuing agency. The checks are conducted in real-time to inform decisions that rely on the confirmation of a person's identity. The DVS is a key tool for organisations that are seeking to prevent dealings with any person who may be using fraudulent identities.
