Dear Mr President

On 28 March 2018, the Senate referred the provisions of the Social Services Legislation Amendment (Encouraging Self-sufficiency for Newly Arrived Migrants) Bill 2018 to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee (Committee) for inquiry and report. Submissions were sought by 11 April 2018 and the committee was due to report on 4 May 2018. The Committee tabled a progress report on 4 May 2018 seeking to extend the reporting date to 18 May 2018.

The Committee has received 21 submissions and held one public hearing, in Melbourne on 17 April 2018.

The Committee intends to seek a further extension to the reporting date to 25 May 2018 to enable it to consider further evidence received and conclude its deliberations.

Yours sincerely,

Senator Slade Brockman
Committee Chair
