Statistical news

On 26 October, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will commence a new monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicator. This first publication will occur alongside the ABS’ quarterly CPI data release. Thereafter, the monthly CPI indicator will be published around 4 weeks after the reference month concludes, starting with the October data release on 30 November. The November data will be an exception, to be published in January 2023. According to the ABS, the quarterly CPI will continue to be Australia’s key inflation measure.

Recent reports

Insights into Australian Exports of Lithium (Article) (ABS)

In summary:

  • Global demand for lithium has grown significantly in recent years. Due to its lightweight properties, lithium is a key component of rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and cameras.
  • Australia is the world’s biggest exporter of lithium. In 2020, 46% of the world’s lithium came from Australia and exports are expected to increase to $9.4 billion in revenue by 2023–24.
  • Most Australian lithium is exported to China, accounting for over 85% of total lithium exports in each month of 2021 and over 94% in each month of 2022 (year to date). Western Australia accounted for over 99% of Australian lithium exports in each month since January 2021.

2020–21 Agriculture Census (ABS)

The 2020–21 ABS Agriculture Census reveals Australia has 387 million hectares of agricultural land, up by 3% from 2019–20. Of this land, 332 million hectares (86%) is used for grazing.

In 2020–21 Australian agriculture increased in value 17% to $71 billion. Total gross value of crops increased 41% to $40 billion in 2020–21. Improved seasonal conditions in many parts of the country saw increases in the production, and in turn, value of many crops. Notable increases in the production of wheat, barley and canola were observed, particularly in New South Wales which experienced near perfect growing conditions for many cereal crops.

By states and territories, in 2020–21:

  • New South Wales produced 13 million tonnes of wheat.
  • South Australia produced 52% of the nation’s wine grapes (872,000 tonnes).
  • Western Australia produced 4.6 million tonnes of barley and 1.7 million tonnes of canola.
  • Victoria has the country’s largest dairy herd with 1.4 million head.
  • Queensland’s beef herd accounted for almost half of Australia’s total, at 10.6 million head.
  • The Northern Territory had 53 million hectares of farmland and 1.7 million beef cattle.
  • The total value of nurseries in the Australian Capital Territory was $2.4 million and accounted for over a quarter (26%) in 2020–21.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the 2020–21 financial year was the coolest and wettest since 2016–17. The improved water availability resulted in a 79% increase in the irrigation volume applied to crops and pastures. Many graziers used the improved seasonal conditions and better pastures to rebuild stocks following several poor seasons.

Data from the Agricultural Census are available by the following geography: Statistical Area 4, 3 and 2; Local Government Areas; Murray Darling Basin region and Natural Resource Management regions.
