Chapter 6 - Senators
Senators-elect
Senators who have been elected to
places in the Senate at periodical Senate elections but whose terms as senators
have not begun are referred to as senators-elect.
The principal
disqualifications for senators probably apply equally to senators-elect, in so
far as they render a person incapable of election to the Senate as well as
membership of the Senate. Thus
senators-elect probably cannot accept positions in the public service of the
Commonwealth, a state or territory, because this would disqualify them under
the provision relating to an office of profit under the Crown. (For a
consideration of this question, see the case of Senator-elect Ferris, under
Qualifications of senators, above.)
For the death or resignation of a senator-elect, see Chapter 4,
Elections for the Senate, under Casual vacancies.
