The Senate met from 10.00 am and suspended at 10.00 pm on Monday, 30 November 2009, met from 10.00 am and suspended at 10.00 pm on Tuesday, 1 December 2009 and met from 10.00 am until 12.37 pm on Wednesday, 2 December 2009

The Senate has now completed its sittings for 2009 and will commence the autumn sittings on 2 February 2010

• Health Insurance Amendment (New Zealand Overseas Trained Doctors) Bill 2009 [passed by the House of Representatives on 30 November 2009]
• Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities) Bill 2009 [passed by the House of Representatives on 26 November 2009]
• Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Income Support for Students) Bill 2009 [No. 2] [passed by the House of Representatives on 25 November 2009]

The Senate adopted report no. 19 of the Selection of Bills Committee, and made the following references:

• Freedom of Information Amendment (Reform) Bill 2009 and Information Commissioner Bill 2009–Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee–to report by 16 March 2010
• Occupational Health and Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2009–Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Legislation Committee–to report by 25 February 2010
• Trade Practices Amendment (Material Lessening of Competition—Richmond Amendment) Bill 2009–Economics Legislation Committee–to report by 18 March 2010

Public meeting

The Senate authorised the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations References Committee to hold a public meeting while the Senate was sitting on 30 November 2009 from 2.00 pm for the committee’s inquiry into the Primary Schools for the 21st Century program.

Membership

The Senate agreed that Senator Siewert replace Senator Hanson-Young on the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Legislation Committee for the committee’s inquiry into Occupational Health and Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2009, and appointed Senator Hanson-Young as a participating member.

A message from the House of Representatives was reported advising that Mr Kerr would replace Ms Vamvakinou on the Treaties Joint Committee.
