Skin Cancer in Australia

On 9 January 2014 the Minister for Health, The Hon Peter Dutton MP, asked the Committee to inquire into and report on skin cancer in Australia.

This is a continuation of the inquiry in the previous parliament conducted by the Standing Committee on Health and Ageing. The former Committee conducted a roundtable public hearing. The transcript can be found here.

Minor alterations to the terms of reference for the inquiry were received by the Committee on 6 March 2014. Consequently, the closing date for written submissions addressing the terms of reference has now been extended to Friday, 28 March 2014 . Please refer to our brochure called preparing a submission for more information. Organisations and individuals who have already provided a submission based on the original terms of reference are welcome to make a supplementary submission addressing the additional term, if desired.

The Committee tabled their Report titled Skin Cancer in Australia: Our National Cancer on 24 March 2015.

About this inquiry

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with skin cancers accounting for almost 80 per cent of all new cancers diagnosed. Two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, and almost 2000 Australians die of skin cancer each year.

The Standing Committee on Health will inquire into melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
