Introduction
This paper provides a concordance of Statistical Local
Areas (SLAs) to Commonwealth electoral divisions. It is based on the 2001
edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC)
as published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)(1).
The concordance incorporates the latest electoral boundaries following
the recent redistributions in the Australian Capital Territory (December
2005), Queensland (November 2006) and New South Wales (November 2006).
The concordance was generated by processing the 2001
Census total population figures excluding overseas visitors in Census
Collection Districts (CCDs) and allocating each CCD to the relevant SLA
and the relevant electoral division of best fit. Where a SLA boundary
was found to cross electoral division boundaries, a percentage was calculated
to show the proportion of the total SLA population that is located in
each electoral division. There are several cases where a SLA name is not
unique therefore the full 9 digit ASGC code for each SLA is included in
the tables. Some SLA names have also been abbreviated to fit into the
tables.
This concordance will enable statistical information
published on a SLA basis, by organisations such as the ABS, to be converted
into electoral division totals. For example, the electoral division of
Banks comprises approximately 45.9 per cent of the population of the SLA
of ‘Bankstown (C)’, 5.5 per cent of ‘Canterbury (C)’, and 61.1 per cent
of ‘Hurstville (C)’.
The concordance is shown in two separate tables. The
same information is contained in each table: Table 1 is sorted alphabetically
by electoral division name; Table 2 is sorted alphabetically by the name
of the SLA.
As mentioned, the information in this paper refers to
the redistributed electoral division boundaries that will be used at the
next election (expected later this year). When 2006 Census data at the
CCD level becomes available later this year (the first release is expected
in August 2007) then the concordance will be revised to incorporate this
more recent population data. The concordance will also be revised to
reflect SLAs from the 2006 edition of the ASGC.
