Output Group 3: Member's Services

3.1 Policy advice

Provision of advice to the Speaker, members and others on members entitlements and support

Advice on members entitlements was provided to the Speaker, members and others by all the offices supporting the output. Informal feedback indicated that the advice was both accurate and generally accepted by those to whom it was provided.

For example, the Presiding Officers were briefed by the Security Controller on 65 occasions on matters relating to major events and incidents within the parliamentary precincts. Those briefings included a number of recommendations for the enhancement of protective security arrangements. All recommendations were accepted.

The department maintained its commitment to keeping members informed about issues relevant to their work. Three issues of the members newsletter, House Update, were published, rather than the usual four, due to the break in parliamentary sittings brought about by the federal election. When the House resumed sitting in 2002, members and their staff were invited to attend a series of briefings about parliamentary procedures and members entitlements. All briefings were well attended, with informal feedback indicating their particular value for newly elected members and newly appointed staff.
