Chapter 16 - Committees
Referral
of matters to committees
Petitions
All petitions presented to the
Senate are provided to the appropriate standing committee for consideration.
This practice arose in 1982 from a suggestion that there should be some
mechanism for following up petitions if appropriate. Committees have
occasionally reported on petitions which have relevance to their standing
references, for example the performance of government agencies. If a committee
wished to pursue other matter raised in a petition, it would need to seek the
reference of the matter by the Senate. In its 3rd Report of 1995 (PP
477/1995) the Procedure Committee recommended against a suggestion that the reference of
petitions be formalised.
