Main Committee Room Friday 9 May 2008 |
On 9 May 1988, the Parliament House in Canberra was officially opened and the first sitting of Parliament there took place on 22 August 1988. Twenty years later it is appropriate to consider how well the new Parliament House has served the nation.
This lecture will explore the relationship between the design of the Australian Parliament House and the way that it functions as a home to both the legislature and the executive. In particular it will reflect upon the extent to which the changing character and culture of the Australian Parliament is shaped by the design of the building and of the two legislative chambers.
Dr Clement Macintyre is a Reader in Politics at the University of Adelaide. He has research interests in contemporary European and Australian politics and in constitutional and parliamentary reform.
