Publication of the Senate Notice Paper

Changes were made at the start of the 39th Parliament to the way in which the Senate Notice Paper is published.

On each sitting day a Notice Paper is published both electronically and in hardcopy format.

Proof Notice Paper

During non-sitting periods a ‘proof’ electronic Notice Paper is available, listing business before the Senate, however this document is subject to change until it is finalised. A proof Notice Paper is distinguished by the words [Proof Copy] in the top right hand corner on the first page. The date at which the Notice Paper was last updated is also recorded in this area. The proof Notice Paper is useful as new questions on notice asked during the non-sitting break are updated weekly.

Notice Papers

A complete or full Notice Paper listing all business before the Senate is published electronically in both PDF and html formats on:

A printed version of the Notice Paper is also distributed listing:

  • in full: business of the Senate, government business and business for future consideration;
  • new orders of the day relating to committee reports, government responses and Auditor-General’s reports;
  • an abbreviated general business section containing all notices of motion for consideration that sitting day, all new government documents plus any government documents for that week which have no motion moved to them and new orders of the day;
  • an abbreviated questions on notice section containing all new questions on notice, a numerical listing of all outstanding questions that are not new and the span of question numbers for those which remain unanswered for 30 or more days;
  • an abbreviated committee section containing all committees and their membership, current inquiries and new reports presented; and
  • in full: information sections such as bills discharged etc, orders of the Senate, contingent notices of motion, temporary chairs of committees, Senate appointments to statutory authorities, ministerial representation in the Senate, a guide to the Notice Paper and a calendar showing the Senate sitting and estimates dates.

On a sitting Thursday a Notice Paper is printed and distributed containing the same information as above with the exception that a full listing is published of all orders of the day relating to committee reports, government responses, Auditor-General’s reports and government documents.

Twice a year at the start of the autumn and spring sittings a complete or full Notice Paper is printed in hardcopy and distributed.
