The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace
Relations (DEEWR) Early Childhood website provides access to information about national and Australian Government early
childhood education policies and programs.
National Partnership Agreement on Early Childhood Education (see also DEEWR’s Early Childhood Education National Partnership website) endorsed by the Council of Australian Governments
(COAG), commits to, by 2013, universal access to an early childhood education program for all children in the year
before formal schooling. This is part of the wider COAG early childhood reform agenda.

About school education The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for
Young Australians (2008), agreed to by state,
territory and Australian Government education ministers, sets the direction
for Australian schooling for the next 10 years.
Department of

The Intergovernmental Agreement on Federal Financial
Relations (IGA) provides for the
Australian Government’s National Schools Specific Purpose Payment (SPP) for
government schools.
The National Education Agreement (NEA), formulated as part of the IGA, defines the
objectives and outcomes for schooling, the roles and responsibilities of each
level of government, performance indicators and benchmarks, reporting
mechanisms and policy and reform directions.
The Schools
Assistance Act 2008 –
provides funding

The Indigenous Education (Targeted Assistance) Act
2000 provides for a range of targeted
programs, collectively known as non-ABSTUDY payments, to support the
educational objectives for Indigenous students. The Indigenous Education (Targeted
Assistance) Act 2000 Program Guidelines 2009-2012 provide information about these programs.
