Hon Peter Slipper MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives
Hon Peter Slipper MP (Fisher, Qld) is the 29th Speaker of the House. He first elected to the House of Representatives in 1984. He was defeated in 1987, but re-elected in 1993 and has been representing the Queensland electorate
of Fisher since then.
Mr Slipper was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on 24 November 2011 following the resignation of Mr Harry Jenkins MP (Scullin, Vic).
He was Deputy Speaker from 28.9.10 to 24.11.11.
Mr Slipper was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance and Administration from 21.10.98 to 26.10.04, and Acting Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from 14.3.02 to 7.10.03.
Mr Slipper has served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and was Chair of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee from 2.12.04 to 17.10.07, and Chair of the Family and Community Affairs Committee from 29.5.96 to 27.11.97.
Mr Slipper has represented the Parliament on a number of delegations and conferences.
Prior to entering Parliament, Mr Slipper was a Barrister and Solicitor in various jurisdictions, and a businessman and farmer. He has a
BA, LLB (Qld).
The Speaker is the principal office holder in the House of Representatives.
In addition to basic work as a Member, the Speaker presides at meetings
of the House, represents the Chamber in dealings with Government and with
other authorities, and in conjunction with the President of the Senate,
oversees the Parliament's administration.
